Nishio's Matcha boasts one of the largest production volumes in Japan ～Nishio, the home of matcha with over 730 years of history Blessed with a warm climate, rich soil from the Yahagi River, and river mist, Nishio is one of Japan's leading matcha producing villages, accounting for approximately 20% of the national production. Its history begins in 1271 when its founder, Shoichi Kokushi, sowed tea seeds on the grounds of Jissoji Temple, which was built in 1271. At that time, it was said to have been enjoyed by monks and aristocrats. Later, in the early Edo period, tea cultivation was encouraged and spread. It wasn't until the Meiji era that matcha production began in earnest. Around 1872, Jundo Adachi, the chief priest of Kojuin, introduced tea seeds and tea-making techniques from Uji, and local farmers began cultivating them.
